PROBLEM

Roselle Park School District’s behavioral data system lacked collaboration and real-time access.

While working for Roselle Park School District, I noticed their:

  • Lack of essential tools that ensure each member of the team collectively has input on students' BP

  • Complex design that required the user to take multiple steps to get information

  • Limited insight into constant changes to students' behavior plan

SOLUTION

Effective Collaboration is Essential.

The redesign aims to enhance the user experience for teachers and behavioral staff by streamlining case collaboration. The proposed platform will incorporate key features such as real-time updates, integrated messaging with voice capabilities, and a shared calendar system to support seamless communication and workflow efficiency

RESEARCH

Understanding the company’s current ABA data collection system

Over several weeks, I used the school's current system to collect program data by running programs implemented by the BCBA, observing the student’s behavioral patterns, and utilizing the material required to collect data. Throughout that time, there were a few insights that emerged:

The school’s current data tracking system, which involves manually recording program results and behavior patterns, is not efficient for real-time data entry while simultaneously working with students.

Site has a complex navigation flow

Accessing individual student progress reports requires navigating through multiple steps, resulting in a fragmented user flow, delayed data entry, and a frustrating experience for all stakeholders interacting with the system

Limited collaborative functionality

The school lacks a system that enables seamless collaboration among team members, making it difficult to provide students with the comprehensive support they need.

Uncovering critical pain points in the user experience

As I navigate through the current platform I notice many pain point and one that stood out the most was the amount of steps needed just to access the students "profile" to view all of their progress over selected amounts of time

Getting a full understanding of our target users and their needs

To gain a deeper understanding of how a typical user interacts with a platform like RethinkEd, I first needed to explore the roles and behaviors of the behavioral health team. I then created a user persona to capture their thoughts, goals, and pain points when using Roselle’s current system.

What determined this particular design?

Below is an overview of tools used and steps take to created the design solution you will see at the end of this case study.

What I learned

Utilizing all the information collected throughout my design research and communicating with people on the team this is the concept I felt would solve the user issues I stated.

SOLUTION

REFLECTION

  • Collaboration Tools Are Crucial for System Efficiency
Designing for multiple stakeholders (teachers, behavioral staff, admins) requires features that support real-time collaboration and communication to avoid delays and miscommunication.

  • Empathizing with Users Unlocks Better Design Decisions
Creating user personas and mapping journeys helped me understand the pain points behavioral health professionals face daily—allowing me to build solutions grounded in empathy.

  • Simplicity in Navigation Matters
Too many steps in the original system led to user frustration and inefficiency. Streamlining the user flow was essential for improving the overall experience.
